Magglio John Boscarino was born in October of 2007 and it did not take long for it to become apparent that he was different. His physical strength was failing him. At 6 months of age Magglio was diagnosed with Pompe Disease which falls under the umbrella of Muscular Dystrophy. In simple terms, due to a genetic snafu his muscles were unable to properly dispose of the waste products that they generate and therefore were unable to function properly. He spent many of his days hospitalized and was fully dependent on a respirator for respiratory function and in need of 24 hour skilled care. On March 31, 2020, at the age of 12, Magglio succumbed to his lifelong challenge. It is very obvious that Magglio was deprived of so much that life has to offer. Yet he did have a large and loving family, a team of skilled doctors and nurses, a safe and comfortable home, and the opportunity of an education as a mainstreamed student in San Mateo, CA. He was a son, a grandson, a nephew, an older brother, a good friend, a baseball player (Little League Challenger Division: Foster City Mariners), a POMPE WARRIOR! Despite Magglio’s daily challenges, he was happy. Magglio left many, many life lessons. The one that seems appropriate to share in this forum is that the ability to use your body to move is not an unalienable right. So if you have the ability, what a shame it would be if you took that ability for granted. Move, enjoy movement, explore movement.
